Pathways to Recovery
Joan Morales
Turning Hardship Into Opportunity
Hudson County
Joan Morales is a young man from Venezuela who came to the United States seeking safety and opportunity after fleeing the instability and repression of the Maduro regime. Like many newcomers, Joan arrived with determination but faced significant barriers—language, finances, and the challenge of rebuilding his life from the ground up in an area affected by the opioid crisis.
Through the Pathways to Recovery Grant at Urban WorkForce Advantage, Joan found the support and guidance he needed to move forward. He gained access to career training, wraparound services, and consistent coaching.
With a clear path ahead, Joan enrolled in a Certified Nursing Assistant program and committed himself fully to completing it.
Committing to a Healthcare Pathway
Joan approached his training with focus and determination. The combination of technical education, practical support, and steady coaching helped him overcome the barriers he faced and prepare for meaningful work in an essential field.
Building Independence Through Care
As of January 30, 2026, Joan is proudly employed full-time as a Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) at Atlas Healthcare in Maywood, earning $22 per hour. His role allows him not only to support himself independently but also to give back through compassionate, hands-on care to patients who need it most.
“Urban WorkForce Advantage gave me more than training—they gave me a future. I came to this country looking for freedom and stability, and now I have a career I’m proud of and the chance to grow.”
From Hardship to Opportunity
