Pathways to Recovery
Crystal Beverly
Turning Compassion Into Purpose
Union County
Urban WorkForce Advantage first met Crystal Beverly through the Community Work Experience Program (CWEP). She entered the program after a challenging upbringing, having begun work at a young age and become fully independent by 19.
Despite those barriers, Crystal consistently showed up with a smile, a willingness to grow, and a genuine desire to move forward. She frequently used the computer lab to research career opportunities and certifications that could help her advance.
Crystal’s circumstances presented obstacles, but her positivity and determination revealed the potential to build a meaningful future.
A Student Ready to Grow
Recognizing her drive, the team introduced Crystal to Pathways to Recovery and the occupational training and employment support it could provide. She enrolled in Job Readiness training and quickly stood out. Crystal sat in the front of the class, participated actively, and consistently asked thoughtful questions.
During the course, she developed her “Why Story”—a personal narrative that helped her express her purpose and form meaningful connections with others.
Finding Her Why
Crystal’s sense of purpose began years earlier while she worked for Preferred Gold Private Home Care in Brooklyn. As a young adult, she was assigned to care for Ms. Evelyn, a 100-year-old client who had few visitors. Crystal chose to offer more than basic care: she talked with Ms. Evelyn, listened to her stories, and gave her time and attention.
Through their conversations, Crystal discovered a remarkable storyteller who loved archaeology and sculpture and had even met Walt Disney. One quiet expression of gratitude stayed with Crystal and shaped the service mindset she still carries today.
“Thank you, Crystal, for speaking to me.”
The experience taught Crystal the importance of treating every person with care, dignity, and presence. She realized that customer service could give her an opportunity to help people every day—turning work into a personal purpose.
Confidence Put Into Action
Today, Crystal is employed at Home Depot in Roselle, New Jersey, earning $18 per hour. She is more confident, prepared, and job-ready than when she first entered the program, and she has expressed deep gratitude for the support she received.
Crystal’s journey demonstrates what can be achieved when determination meets the right opportunity. She is now equipped to continue growing, pursue new possibilities, and bring her commitment to helping others into every role she chooses.
