Pathways to Recovery
Basim Terry
Turning Determination Into Stability
Union County
Basim Terry began his journey at Urban WorkForce Advantage through the Community Work Experience Program (CWEP), which supports people receiving public assistance through community service and active job searching.
Early in the program, Basim struggled with punctuality and presenting the full potential that staff knew he possessed. As the team worked more closely with him, they learned that he was a single father living in a shelter while navigating significant personal challenges and trying to create a better life for his daughter.
His circumstances explained the challenges he faced, but his determination shaped what came next.
Choosing Growth and Accountability
Basim often spoke about wanting to own a car and become a strong role model for his daughter. Over time, he made a conscious decision to change his path. He committed himself to growth, accountability, and progress, refusing to let past mistakes define his future.
Through hard work and dedication, Basim built strong relationships with the Urban WorkForce Advantage staff and became a valued member of the community. He still visits regularly, always arriving with a smile and reminding the team how far he has come.
A Pathway to Stability
Recognizing his determination, the team introduced Basim to the Pathways to Recovery program and explained how it could help him pursue stability and independence. Basim enrolled and fully embraced the opportunity, applying the same commitment that had already begun transforming his life.
A Lasting Transformation
Today, Basim is employed full-time, earning $23.75 per hour. He has secured his own vehicle and no longer depends on public transportation to get to work. Each achievement represents another step toward the stability and independence he envisioned for himself and his daughter.
Basim’s journey is living proof that with perseverance, the right mindset, and meaningful support, lasting change is possible.
